Synopsis

One of the central issues in the characterization and diagnosis stages in the different spatial planning schemes is the regionalization or territorial delimitation, necessary both for the evaluation of the suitability of the land - a step prior to (the) planning - and for the hazard and vulnerability zoning or to establish the geographic distribution of biota.
The cartography of natural systems as a geographical basis for territorial planning presents, first, the schools of the international level, beginning with those originated in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, then those developed in Australia and Western Europe; and secondly, it describes the approaches developed in Mexico.
