Synopsis

This book brings together a selection of papers presented at the colloquium "The memory of names: toponymy in the historical conformation of the territory", which took place from June 3 to 5, 2015. The objective of this work is to to confront various disciplines (History, Ethnohistory, Anthropology, Linguistics, Historical Geography, Statistics, Oral History, Archeology, Iconography) that make use of toponymy as a tool and source of analysis.
Each of the authors of this publication contributes with original works to the knowledge of toponymy from different disciplines of the Social Sciences, which at first constitutes a valuable reference in the matter, confronting the different methodologies, questions, sources, study materials and cultural varieties in the vast multicultural and multilingual scene of Mexico.
Some questions that are resolved throughout the works included here are: What motivates to name a place in this or that way? Can we know if there is a certain policy of naming the sites, towns and cities that men inhabited in different historical periods? What have been the contributions and problems that the different disciplines have addressed through toponymy, and what are their most important contributions and revelations?
